Get to know us
We began as five public health professionals working across two worlds—three embedded in South Sudan’s Ministry of Health, managing a World Bank-funded healthcare project, and two shaping future clinicians at the University of Juba’s School of Medicine. While publishing studies in the South Sudan Medical Journal and global journals, we noticed a glaring gap: our nation’s health narrative was being written by outsiders, often missing critical context or overshadowed by outdated stereotypes.
It became clear that data alone wouldn’t heal our fractured system. South Sudan, the world’s youngest nation, needed a homegrown institution to bridge the divide between frontline realities and evidence-based policymaking. In 2022, we pooled our expertise—spanning health economics, biostatistics, digital innovation, pharmacy, and conflict-sensitive monitoring—to found the Canal Institute of Medical Research and Innovation.
Today, we operate at the intersection of grassroots insight and cutting-edge science. Our work has one north star: ensuring South Sudan’s health future is authored by those who know its soil, scars, and sky best—its own people.
